Can Tom Cruise and co save the world in Mission Impossible 4 Ghost Protocol?

This winter's  has to walk a very delicate line. On one hand, it has to reinvent the series thanks to all manner of external circumstances, like the commercial under-performance of Mission: Impossible III and the increasing public mistrust of

But then again, Mission: Impossible has to remain as an identifiable Mission: Impossible film. It's a hard act to pull off. Tilt too far one way and you might alienate all of Mission: Impossible's existing fans. Tilt too far the other and you'll just be serving up a reheated goop of knackered old tropes. Luckily, thanks to the newest Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol trailer, we're more able than ever to assess the balance that's been struck.

Still from Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol 1

1) Tom Cruise wearing a disguise. We've seen this before, of course. Tom Cruise's Mission: Impossible character is a master of disguise, so he's always dressing up as other people. However, none of Cruise's disguises have ever been as endearingly crap as this – a fake moustache and a hat. Which means that, so far, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol is completely new.

Still from Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol 2

2) Tom Cruise getting flung at an awkward angle by an explosion. We've seen this too – the shot of Tom Cruise getting flung at an awkward angle by an explosion on a bridge was one of Mission: Impossible III's most iconic moments. However, this scene doesn't take place on a bridge, so it's still fresh and exciting. Well played, Mission: Impossible.

Still from Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol 3

3) Simon Pegg pulling a face. Simon Pegg's entire screentime on Mission: Impossible III was spent pulling a face. But, crucially, it was an infinitesimally different face to the one he's pulling here. Vive la différence!

Still from Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol 4

4) Tom Cruise running as fast as he can with a face that suggests he's holding in a fart. Sadly, we have seen this many times before. In every film he's ever made, Tom Cruise runs really fast with a silly expression on his face. Every single one. Disappointing.

Still from Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol 5

5) A woman in a ballgown getting out of a sports car legs-first. I know what you're thinking. You're thinking that this is almost the exact same shot used in Mission: Impossible III to announce the arrival of Maggie Q. But hold on there, buster – in that film, the car was a slightly different colour. This is fresh and new and exciting.

Still from Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol 6

6) Sawyer from Lost looking a bit shifty in your grandpa's cap. This is exciting. To my knowledge, no previous Mission: Impossible film has ever featured any former Lost cast member in any form of vaguely antiquated headwear. This immediately negates the thing about Tom Cruise running.

Still from Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol

7) A woman controlling a touch-screen map projected on to a transparent surface. Now I'm confused. This is a direct steal from Tom Cruise's Minority Report, but it's new for the Mission Impossible series. Oh, screw it, I'm going to say this is another bold reinvention.

Still from Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol 8

8) Tom Cruise titting about with crashed vehicles somewhere dusty. Remember in Mission: Impossible II, where the entire climax involved Tom Cruise titting about with some crashed vehicles and Dougray Scott? They were motorbikes. These are cars. It literally couldn't be more different. If you disagree, you're wrong.

Still from Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol 9

9) A character perfectly suspended by a complex pulley system with his arms outstretched. No, this has never happened in any Mission: Impossible film. Not even once. Another innovation.

Still from Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol 10

10) Tom Cruise leaps out of the world's tallest building attached to a hosepipe and then runs down the side of it.

‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol’ engage in a savage spy-on-spy catfight

The lovely ladies of ‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol’ engage in a savage spy-on-spy catfight in this latest clip from the movie.

Paula Patton in Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol clip

When your upcoming movie is sitting on uncertain ground – as Paramount’s Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol arguably is – sometimes you have to bring out the big guns in order to help bait those filmgoers swimming through the crowded sea of holiday season movies.

Well, the Paramount marketing team is indeed reaching for their big guns (again) with this latest Ghost Protocol clip, which features the two lovely ladies of the cast – Paula Patton (Mirrors) and Léa Seydoux (Inglourious Basterds) – engaged in a spy-on-spy catfight

If you’re wondering how this lady brawl fits into the overall scheme of the movie (which involves Ethan Hunt’s (Tom Cruise) IMF team beign framed for a terrorist act), you should check out the Ghost Protocol preview footage review that was posted by our own Roth Cornet awhile back. Hint: it involves a fairly intricate con that culminates in Cruise’s building-scaling hijinks.

Director Brad Bird (The Incredibles) seems to have – at the very least – constructed a light, fun, popcorn action flick that will be competent, if not original or thrilling. Given the Pixar alum’s impressive track record, some fans are likely expecting more from Bird, but as this is his first foray into big-budget live-action fare, expectations should probably be tempered accordingly.

On the other hand, at this point, a lot of people would probably be happy just getting a competent Mission:Impossible film.

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol will be in theaters on December 21, 2011; IMAX prints of the movie will start showing in theaters on December 16th (with that Dark Knight Rises prologue attached!).Headover to Watch Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol movie online

List of All the awesome films this fall-2011

Movies-2011

http://www.destroythecyb.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/movies1.jpg

We sure had a lot of fun at the movies this summer, didn't we? Between the tears at the end of the "Harry Potter" saga, the cheers for superheroes like the "X-Men" and "Thor" and the laughs at "Bridesmaids" and "The Hangover: Part II," the summer just flew by. But now it's gone, and it leaves us with just one thing to look forward to.

All the awesome films of fall.

For screen junkies, the best part of the year is yet to come, because the fall movie lineup has all the action of summer combined with the best new festival favorites, horror gems for Halloween and Oscar bait for award season. So saddle up, because we've got your ultimate guide to the 37 must-see movies of fall -- and it's going to be a wild ride.

September

'Contagion'

Contagion
Warner Bros.

Release Date: Sept. 9
Starring: Kate Winslet,  Matt Damon,  Gwyneth Paltrow,  Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law, Marion Cotillard
The Scoop: If you're feeling a bit down in the mouth these days, the prescription isn't more cowbell -- it's an ensemble blockbuster from the master of ensemble blockbusters, "Ocean's Eleven" director  Steven Soderbergh. He's wrangled up a crew of some of Hollywood's biggest superstars for an infectious new thriller about a worldwide pandemic that threatens to destroy society one microbe at a time. Our suggestion: Buy two tickets and call us in the morning.

'Warrior'

Warrior
Lionsgate

Release Date: Sept. 9
Starring:  Tom Hardy, Joel Edgerton, Nick Nolte
The Scoop: If you're suffering from combat sport movie fatigue, it'd be easy to dismiss "Warrior" as a "Fighter" clone for the UFC set. Or an unofficial prequel to "The Wrestler." But then you'd be missing what's sure to be one of fall's most acclaimed films, a drama equally as emotional as it is high-kicking and hard-swinging, about estranged brothers (Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton) who reunite in the most unusual of circumstances: in the cage at a high-stakes mixed martial arts showdown. Be prepared to relish in gut-punches and man-tears.

'Drive'

Drive
FilmDistrict

Release Date: Sept. 16
Starring:  Ryan Gosling,  Carey Mulligan, Albert Brooks
The Scoop: Is Ryan Gosling the new  James Franco? The guy has been everywhere recently, earning award nominations and acclaim for films like "Blue Valentine," "Lars and the Real Girl" and "Crazy, Stupid, Love," and even starring as a crime-fighter in real life. His first of two prestige films this fall is the buzzed-about "Drive," in which he stars as a taciturn stunt driver who moonlights as a getaway man for local thieves. When things go sour, he finds himself in a race against time -- and unfortunately for time, racing is what he does best. Welcome to the superstar club, Ryan.

'Abduction'

Abduction
Lionsgate

Release Date: Sept. 23
Starring: Taylor Lautner, Lily Collins
The Scoop: Can Taylor Lautner thrive outside of "The Twilight Saga"? To which we say, does a werewolf have fleas? (That's rhetorical). The answer, provided by "Abduction," is a resounding yes as the abtacular teen idol jumps to the big leagues in a story about a kid who realizes his life is a lie when he sees his own face on a missing person's website. So who is behind the abduction? It's going to be a tricky one for Lautner to solve, because based on his "Twilight" fan base, he has about 50 million suspects.

'Moneyball'

Moneyball
Sony

Release Date: Sept. 23
Starring:  Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill,  Philip Seymour Hoffman
The Scoop: We know what you're thinking: Watching a movie about baseball? Isn't that the only thing more boring than actually watching baseball itself? But we remind you that your average baseball game doesn't have Brad Pitt in it. And since this film -- about a general manager for the Oakland A's who overturns the traditions of the league and creates a whole new style of baseball in the process -- is a labor of love for Pitt, you can be sure that he and co-stars Jonah Hill and Philip Seymour Hoffman have brought their A-game. Play ball!

'50/50'

50/50
Summit

Release Date: Sept. 30
Starring:  Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen, Anna Kendrick
The Scoop: Is there anything funnier than cancer? Before you answer that, you might want to check out "50/50," which stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a youngster who is diagnosed with The Big C. Seth Rogen plays his best bud, which is fitting considering Rogen co-wrote the movie with his real-life best bud, who also suffered from cancer. The result is both moving and surprisingly funny. And hey, how often do you get to see JGL shave his head on screen? See, even cancer has its upside.

'Take Shelter'

Take Shelter
Sony Classics

Release Date: Sept. 30
Starring: Michael Shannon,  Jessica Chastain
The Scoop: It's not your imagination: Jessica Chastain has been in every single movie this year. Okay, that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but not by much; "Take Shelter" is one of six movies (along with the critically acclaimed " The Help" and "The Tree of Life") the emerging star headlines in 2011. This time she plays the beleaguered wife of a man (" Revolutionary Road" Oscar nom Michael Shannon) who has terrifying visions. Is he going mad? Or are his visions actually harbingers of the coming apocalypse? We trust Chastain to make yet another right decision.

'Dream House

Dream House
Universal

Release Date: September 30
Starring: Daniel Craig,  Rachel Weisz, Naomi Watts
The Scoop: We think it's probably safe to say that the title "Dream House" is intended to be somewhat ironic considering this movie is about a couple (Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz) who discover their new home is really, really, seriously haunted. Of course, the pair did end up getting married after this horror flick finished filming, so maybe this really was their "Dream House." For the rest of us, though, it's just a good old-fashioned haunted house movie. And in this age of overdone gimmicks, that really could be a dream come true.

'What's Your Number?'

What's Your Number?
Fox

Release Date: Sept. 30
Starring:  Anna Faris, Chris Evans
The Scoop: Any excuse to see Anna Faris in action is a good excuse, but few have been quite as good as this one: "Number" features the " Scary Movie" star as a young woman who realizes she might have already met -- and dumped -- her dream guy. So she begins tracking down all of her exes to figure out which one of them was actually Mr. Right, which provides the perfect opportunity for everyone from Aziz Ansari to Andy Samberg to Zachary Quinto to provide cameos as the men in her past. Faris's number could be number one after this.

October

'The Ides of March

Ides of March
Sony

Release Date: Oct. 7
Starring:  George Clooney, Ryan Gosling,  Paul Giamatti, Philip Seymour Hoffman
The Scoop: Nobody does smart films like George Clooney (see: "Syriana," "Good Night and Good Luck") and now he's back with perhaps his best effort yet. "The Ides of March" features Clooney (who also directs) as a presidential candidate with a dark secret. When his campaign director (Ryan Gosling) discovers that secret he must balance his ideology with the practical politics of winning at all costs. Paul Giamatti and Philip Seymour Hoffman help round out a brilliant cast. That smell in the air? That's the smell of award season approaching.

'Wanderlust'

Wanderlust
Universal

Release Date: Oct. 7
Starring: Jennifer Aniston,  Paul Rudd, Malin Akerman
The Scoop: Jennifer Aniston is kind of like the female Paul Rudd, so it's only fitting that Aniston and Rudd are teaming up here for this new rom-com about a posh New York couple who, forced by the economic downturn to move to the deep south, end up accidentally joining a hippie commune. Oh yeah, did we mention that it's written and directed by " Wet Hot American Summer" writer  David Wain? And produced by, of course,  Judd Apatow? Say no more.

'The Big Year

The Big Year
Fox

Release Date: Oct. 14
Starring: Owen Wilson, Jack Black, Steve Martin
The Scoop: The unexpected comedy dream team of Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson comes together for a film with an even more unexpected premise: Black and Martin play dudes who team up to take down Wilson in a cutthroat national bird watching championship. That's a real thing, believe it or not. Frankly, we'd watch these three sleep, so the fact that they are in a quirky, offbeat film like "The Big year" is just gravy.

'Footloose'

Footloose
Paramount

Release Date: Oct. 14
Starring: Kenny Wormald, Julianne Hough, Dennis Quaid
The Scoop: It's the generational gap to end all generational gaps. Whether or not you remember leg warmers and Cabbage Patch Kids may determine whether or not you find the idea of a "Footloose" remake to be heresy. Still, we have high hopes that this updated version -- which shows how a rebellious teen (in this case Kenny Wormald) teaches an uptight town the joy of dancing -- will introduce a new generation to the fun of cutting footloose.

'Paranormal Activity 3'

Paranormal Activity
Paramount

Release Date: Oct. 21
Starring: These aren't actors, it's found footage!
The Scoop: The 1980s are the hottest thing going in Hollywood these days, so it's a real stroke of luck for the people behind the wildly popular "Paranormal Activity" horror franchise that the footage they've found this time happens to be on old VHS tapes from that decade. Those tapes also happen to show sisters Katie and Kristi as little girls -- little girls who innocently stumble upon an undying evil that will haunt their lives forever. What will they find next?!

'The Three Musketeers'

The Three Musketeers
Summit

Release Date: Oct. 21
Starring: Logan Lerman, Christoph Waltz, Milla Jovovich
The Scoop: The classic Alexandre Dumas novel "The Three Musketeers" has been adapted for film umpteen times, so you're probably already familiar with the tale of the legendary band of French warriors and their motto, "all for one, one for all." But you probably haven't seen it like this before; after all, this time "Resident Evil" director Paul W.S. Anderson is at the helm, with his wife Milla Jovovich is co-starring as the sinister Milady de Winter. Add in the likes of Orlando Bloom and Christoph Waltz -- not to mention eye-popping 3-D -- and it's safe to say that this isn't your father's (or mother's) "Three Musketeers."

'The Rum Diary'

The Rum Diary
Warner Bros.

Release Date: Oct. 28
Starring: Johnny Depp, Amber Heard, Aaron Eckhart
The Scoop: Johnny Depp has been working for years to bring his buddy Hunter S. Thompson's novel "The Rum Diary to the big screen and darned if he hasn't finally done it. Of course, being the biggest movie star in the world doesn't hurt, either. Depp headlines the story of a journalist who ditches the mainland in favor of Puerto Rico where he begins drinking, carousing and keeping a detailed diary of his exploits. A rogue who guzzle rum? Captain Jack Sparrow would most definitely approve.

'In Time'

In Time
Fox

Release Date: Oct. 28
Starring: Justin Timberlake,  Amanda Seyfried, Olivia Wilde
The Scoop: Justin Timberlake has been a force in pop culture for a long time now, but he still looks fresh as a daisy, which makes him the perfect person to star in "In Time." JT plays a guy living in a future where people are immortal -- if they are rich enough. If not, they "expire" at age 25. When he inherits a fortune, his future seems secure, but murder charges have a way of messing up even the best plan, so he goes on the run (along with co-star Amanda Seyfried). Will Timberlake achieve the same immortality on screen that his talents have already earned him off screen? Let's just say that the future looks bright.

'Like Crazy'

Like Crazy
Paramount

Release Date: Oct. 28
Starring: Anton Yelchin, Felicity Jones, Jennifer Lawrence
The Scoop: Anton Yelchin's fourth film of the year (following "The Beaver," "The Smurfs" and "Fright Night") may be his best of the year as well. Here the up-and-coming star plays a college student who falls in love with a foreign exchange student (Felicity Jones). When she overstays her visa, though, she gets strong-armed out of the country by government officials, turning their perfect romance into a perfect mess. Considering "Like Crazy" won the top prize at this year's Sundance Film Festival, though, their loss is everyone's gain

Johnny Depp's animated caper tops UK box office

'Rango' tops UK box office

Johnny Depp's animated caper 'Rango' has topped the UK box office.

Much like 'Rango's box office weekend in the US, the Western comedy saw off Matt Damon's existential thriller 'The Adjustment Bureau' to land the top spot.

'Rango' earned £1.6 million, while 'The Adjustment Bureau' was in second place after taking £1.4 million.

Liam Neeson's latest action film 'Unknown' was another brand new entry. It came third after earning £1.3 million, while Simon Pegg and Nick Frost's 'Paul' dropped from second to fourth place.

Oscar winner 'The King's Speech' moved one spot from sixth to fifth, while last week's number one movie, 'Gnomeo and Juliet', dropped to sixth place.

'I Am Number Four', 'True Grit', 'West is West' and 'Yogi Bear' rounded out the top ten.

Movie about the WikiLeaks founder

The actors are 6-1 joint favourites to play the Australian website creator who's currently facing extradition from the UK to Sweden over allegations of rape and sexual assault.

Steven Spielberg's company Dreamworks have sparked the interest after purchasing film rights to two books, 'WikiLeaks: Inside Julian Assange's War on Secrecy', written by Guardian journalists David Leigh and Luke Harding, and 'Inside WikiLeaks: My Time with Julian Assange at the World's Most Dangerous Website' by Daniel Domscheit-Berg, leaving us speculating over who will land the lead role.

While New Zealand-born Russell Crowe grew up in Australia and wouldn't have to learn an accent for the part, American star Matt Damon has already proved he can master a foreign accent with his convincing performance as a South African in 'Invictus'.

British actors Jude Law, Daniel Craig and Michael Sheen are among the other actors on the bookies' list with Leonardo DiCaprio, George Clooney, Harrison Ford and Kevin Spacey also included. It would seem very unlikely that Charlie Sheen, a 66-1 outsider, would actually be considered for the role.

Julian Assange launched WikiLeaks in 2006 to give whistleblowers an online platform for exposing the truth. The site's exposure of private political conversations has landed him in trouble and made him public enemy No. 1 in several countries. In addition to the allegations in Sweden, the US is seeking to prosecute Assange.

Are you surprised a movie about the WikiLeaks founder is being talked about so soon? Who do you think should take on the role of Assange?

2011 Movies:Movies We Can't Wait to See:Moovieland.com

Could 2011 be a great year for movies? So far, all signs point to "yes." Moviefone has you covered with our list of the most anticipated 2011 movies, from the final installment of 'Harry Potter' to Ryan Reynolds in 'The Green Lantern' to Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz in 'Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides' -- not to mention smaller movies like Terrence Malick's 'Tree of Life' and the Nick Frost/Simon Pegg alien comedy 'Paul.'

After the jump, check out our list of the  movies We Can't Wait to See in 2011

  (MARCH 2011)

Movies 2011(March):Movies We Can't Wait to See
'The Adjustment Bureau'
Release Date: Mar. 4
Starring: Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Anthony Mackie, Shohreh Aghdashloo, John Slattery
What It's About: A congressman (Damon) meets and falls for a ballet dancer (Blunt) -- but a shadowy cabal of men in suits tries to keep them apart, claiming that our fate ultimately isn't in our own hands.
The Buzz: Based (loosely) on the Philip K. Dick story 'Adjustment Team,' this sci-fi thriller was originally slated for release last July, and then September, before being moved to this March. Doesn't seem to bode well, yet the trailer is sleek and stylish, and we still have great expectations -- mostly, admittedly, based on how much we love Damon and Blunt.

Release Date: Mar. 4
Starring: Johnny Depp, Abigail Breslin, Isla Fisher
What It's About: Depp voices a chameleon with an identity crisis who ends up the sheriff of an Old West town.
The Buzz: Depp's character is supposedly based on gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson, who he played in 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.' Can turning Thompson into a lizard make a good kids movie? We can't stop here. This is lizard country!

'Jane Eyre':Moovieland'Jane Eyre'
Release Date: Mar. 11
Starring: Mia Wasikowska, Michael Fassbender, Jamie Bell, Judi Dench
What It's About: Adapted from the classic novel by Charlotte Bronte, the story follows a meek governness who slowly falls in love with her employer, despite her knowledge of his awful secret.
The Buzz: These romantic novels have been done to death, but this modern adaption boasts a young, stellar cast, and director Cary Fukunaga has been quoted as saying he's going to focus on the "darker elements" of the novel.

Moovieland:The Lincoln Lawyer''The Lincoln Lawyer'
Release Date: Mar. 18
Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Marisa Tomei, Ryan Phillippe
What It's About: An L.A. defense lawyer (McConaughey) who practices out of his Lincoln Town Car takes on the high-profile case of a wealthy playboy (Phillippe) whose guilt -- or innocence -- may not be as cut-and-dried as it seems. Based on the novel by Michael Connelly.
The Buzz: Remember back when McConaughey starred in 'A Time to Kill' and we all thought he'd be the next Gregory Peck? (More or less.) Several bad romantic comedies later, he's returning to the courtroom, and dare we say, we're kind of excited about it. Plus, we can't wait to see Phillippe bring out his deliciously evil side as the potentially villainous client.

Moovieland:'The Beaver''The Beaver'
Release Date: Mar. 23
Starring: Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster, Anton Yelchin, Jennifer Lawrence, Cherry Jones
What It's About: A depressed father (Gibson) finds a beaver hand puppet and, improbably, uses it to re-connect with his wife and kids.
The Buzz: The oddball project, directed by Foster, had been seen as being Gibson's comeback vehicle. But fallout from Gibson's insensitive rantings last summer delayed the movie's release date and still threatens to mar this promising, inventive drama.
